Lesson from rugby

Uganda rugby team beat Zambia in a World Cup 2003 qualifier over the weekend.

By Joseph Kabuleta Uganda rugby team beat Zambia in a World Cup 2003 qualifier over the weekend. The real lesson for all Ugandan sport, however, was not as much on the pitch as off it. A couple of years ago, the Kyadondo Rugby Football ground that hosted the big match was a dejected wet-land occasionally used by first division soccer clubs –– when the weather permitted. Heathens RFC, who now call the ground home, came up with a mighty development plan which convinced first Kampala City Council to give them the ground, then International Rugby Board to offer some development cash. So the improvement in Ugandan rugby demonstrated by the comprehensive victory over Zambia is matched by the infrastructural development. The World Cup is still a distance away but after years of steady progress, rugby can confidently say that if not Sydney 2003, then later, but the dream is alive Just as URFU chairman Paul Sigombe told minister of Sports Henry Oryem, the sport could use some government assistance, but at least they are making the most of what they already have. The same can’t be said of soccer, boxing..
