By Frederick Kiwanuka THE Government has stopped animal restocking in the former Luweero Triangle districts because of many irregularities involved. The minister in-charge of Luweero Triangle, Mr. Timothy Lwanga, on Friday said animal restocking was to be replaced by other income generating projects which the government would introduce. Lwanga, who is touring Luweero Triangle districts said restocking would have to be redesigned if it was to be re-introduced at all. He told The New Vision that his ministry had stopped distributing construction materials to residents saying the project was not viable. “It does not make sense to invite somebody to Kampala to collect just one bag of cement and five iron sheets,” Lwanga said. He said the restocking had to be stopped because he had received complaints that the animals distributed were not worth the money. He said some beneficiaries had even sold off their animals. Lwanga said the Government was working on a comprehensive plan to fight poverty in the Luweero triangle by funding income-generating projects. On the payment of gratuity to veterans, Lwanga said over 1,200 of them had so far been paid. He said only 36 veterans missed the payment because their money was stolen. He, however, said the government was organising to pay them. The suspension of the restocking comes amid public outcry that the exercise was being abused by district authorities through dubious tendering systems. Luweero Triangle bore the brunt of the five-year bush war in the early 1980’s against the Obote II government. Many residents lost lives and property including animals.
