Police cashes on Express poor form

By James Bakama POLICE not only strode from the relegation zone on Saturday, but also made history with their first league win over giants Express since 1995. The best the policemen had achieved against Express since returning to the premier league had been wins in friendlies. But a Richard Kato penalty, a Francis Gonzaga own goal and Yusuf Kinene’s score shot Police into the Nile Special Super League records. This was the policemen’s first win over Express in over two decades. The Police side included stars like current Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) president Dennis Obua that time. But, as Police was making history, Express’ chances of finishing amongst the top three were being shaken with the defeat. That Mbale Heroes, whom Express had been level with prior to Saturday’s kick-off, won their match against Horizon the same day, worsened matters for Express. Heroes replaced Godfrey Nyoola’s side in third position. The Express-Police equation had striker Hassan Mubiru featuring prominently. Mubiru, bred by Police, later joined SC Villa before this season shifting to Express in what is believed to have been a record signing. But against his former side on Saturday, the Nile Special Super League top scorer was ineffective. Interestingly, he was tight marked by a namesake Sam Mubiru, who ensured that the striker did not target the net. Police have to beat Black Rhino on Wednesday to completely dispel relegation fears. Meanwhile league action continues tomorrow with Villa taking on Chicago, Masaka facing Horizon, while KCC will travel to Tororo for a date with Rock Star. Simba will the same day battle fellow army side Military Police. - At Kakyeka stadium yesterday, hosts Mbarara whipped Mbale Heroes 3-0 after a goal from Joseph Kayemba and two by Toto Songe, adds Busingye Tibenderana.
