THE Electoral Commission chairman, Dr. Badru Kiggundu, has urged politicians in Uganda to develop a culture of conceding defeat.

Kiggundu made the remarks while addressing journalists at Mbale Municipal Council chambers recently.

The EC boss, who was returning from Bulambuli and Sironko districts where he spent three days overseeing the local council polls, said the elections body had postponed elections in Bulegeni town council in Bulambuli, following a boundary dispute between the town council and Bulegeni sub-county.

“I told the residents that it was not the responsibility of the Electoral Commission to demarcate administrative boundaries but that of the Government through relevant ministries,” Kiggundu said.

He condemned election violence that marred polls in Budadiri West constituency during the presidential and parliamentary elections where security personnel and supporters fought running battles which left several people injured.

Kiggundu said he was surprised to see several residents moving around with sticks and beating fellow residents as if they were animals.

“The Police impounded a pick-up truck loaded with sticks. I remained wondering whether it was the culture among Bagisu in Sironko district and Bulambuli to carry sticks and use them to distabilise others,” he said.
