THE Uganda Olympic Committee is committed to investing more in kids’ sports, as a way of grooming future stars from the grassroots.

UOC, through their ‘Sports for All’ programme had teamed up with the ministry of education’s programme “Kids on the Move” and “Learning by Doing” to involve both children and parents in sports activities.

“This is the only way to go. Within the next five years, we shall have well groomed players right from a tender age. That is what we are lacking at present,” said Rogers Ddungu, the UOC president. The soccer and athletics federations are offering technical assistance.

At the event held at Shoprite Lugogo on Saturday over 1000 children from neighbouring schools were introduced to different games that included hurdles, skipping, penalty taking, dribbling among others, using locally made materials.

“What we want is for the parents and teachers to learn how to use local materials in developing sports,” said Gunter Lange, the ministry’s technical expert.
