When Agnes Nassazi left Mundondo village in Kamengo, Mpigi and came to Kampala, she hoped to find a good casual job for her upkeep. But as fate had it, two years down the road, there was no job.

These two years were terrible, as she recalls. There was no food. That was when Nassazi went to Church to pray for employment. While at it, she became a Born-again Christian, earning the name ‘Mulokole’.

As Nassazi was seeking God’s intervention, she recalled that in the village, she used to burn charcoal and she revisited that chapter.

Nassazi approached a friend who was selling charcoal, for capital to start her business.

Her friend lent her four bags of charcoal. Nassazi sold them, paid her debt and was left with profit to buy one bag of charcoal. She bought and sold the charcoal and from then on, her business has been growing steadily.

Today, nine years down the road, Nassazi has something to show for it. She sells tomatoes and matooke alongside the charcoal. Nassazi has managed to take care of both hers and her mother’s families’ needs.

Nassazi has also built rooms for rent. First, she constructed a two-room house near her mother’s home, and then a grocery shop. With the earnings from rent and shop, Nassazi bought a plot of land on which she constructed five other rooms for rent. Recently, she bought another piece of land where she is building her house.

Because she lives far from her business, Nassazi has bought a car to ease her movements.

When asked what she attributes her success to, she says it is her faithful tithing in church. She, however, is quick to add that business has not been a bed of roses.

“People used to borrow money from me, but they would not pay back,” she says. So, Nassazi has since stopped lending money from her business. She is also grateful to her faithful customers who pay her well, even those who take charcoal on credit.

Nassazi is a single mother of three. Her eldest son, who is 13 years, is in Primary Six and the others who are nine and seven years are in P.3 and P.1 respectively.

When Nassazi was expecting her firstborn, his father, who was a boda boda rider, was murdered by thugs, and his motorcycle was stolen. Unfortunately, she parted ways with her second husband. However, when he got wind of her success, he tried to reconcile with her, but the relationship was beyond repair.

On how she handles men who
make sexual advances her now that she is successful, Nassazi said she has put a halt on dating. The men who have tried to date her have often times just been seeking to reap from her sweat, something she refers to as ‘kumukula’. She is now looking out for a faithful man who will wed her in church.

During her free time, Nassazi sings gospel music. She has recorded one album, which has six songs and is working on her second one. What has inspired Nassazi into singing is her success.

After she built her first two rooms, Nassazi felt a song on her heart called Tuyige Okwebaza, a song, she says to give thanks to God. The song plays on Christian radio stations.

Nassazi says what drives her and inspires her to work harder each day is that she does not want her children to go through the suffering that she went through when she was growing up.

She also wants to invest in different ventures that will provide the money to look after them as they grow up.
