LADY Rugby Cranes tactician Anthony Kinene has urged the local governing body-Uganda Rugby Union to help Universities improve the standard of the sport in the higher institutions of learning.

Kinene was not impressed by the rugby standards in the Inter-University Games that ended with Kyambogo emerging victorious after a 22-12 win over Nkumba at Ndejje university campus-Luwero.

“There is a lot more wanting in university rugby, I don’t think it’s because of the timing that teams didn’t have enough preparations together,” Kinene stated.

Suited in an old red and white stripped jersey, the institution used in 1999 during the reign of former Rugby Cranes kicker and current Lady Cranes 7s coach Anthony Kinene, Kyambogo whipped Nkumba 22-12 in the rugby final.

Pius Ociraje ,Elieza Kwikiriza,  Herbert Namugi scored a try each, Kevin Mackmot  and Charles Onen added a penalty and a conversion respectively for Kyambogo while John Wandichi, and Robert Okot scored Nkumba’s two tries.

Kyambogo team captain Kwikiriza attributed their victory to God’s Grace. “They gave away the University league title, but God has rewarded us with this and we are very grateful,” an excited Kwikiriza stated.

2009 champions, Makerere University won the third play-off by a toss of a sh100 coin after 5-5 draw in normal time against MUBS.
In Karate, Ndejje Ladies had a clean sweep in the individual class as Emma Waihenya, Anne Apio and Patricia Amuria won gold, Silver and bronze respectively.

In the men’s category, KIU won the Kata senior while Makerere took top honours in the Kata novices while Ndejje’s Martin Emoku won gold in the Men’s individual category.

In football, Mutesa University proved a threat to Cup holders Kampala University as they whipped, Multi tech, Gulu and Nkumba, 4-1, 2-0 and 2-1 respectively to book a quarterfinal slot.

Mutesa’s lethal striker Emmanuel Obitre tops the scorers chart with five goals after scoring two goals against Nkumba and two against Multi Tech with one against Gulu.

Action continues today with athletics and knockout stages in football, Netball, handball, Volleyball and basketball.
