THE government plans to construct a hydro electricity power-generating dam in Kamuli district to increase electricity generation and distribution in the country, the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has revealed.

Kadaga who is also the Kamuli woman Member of Parliament said the dam will be constructed at Isimba falls located in Isimba village along the River Nile. The spot is located about one kilometer from Kisozi sub county headquarters in Kamuli district.

Kadaga who was responding to concerns of area residents over inadequate power distribution and supply on Saturday, however said the government would first complete construction of Karuma dam.

“Government’s priority is to finish the construction of Karuma dam. Once this (Karuma) and  Bujagali dam in Jinja district become operational, then government will start the construction of Isimba dam,” Kadaga said adding that this would help reduce the high power tariffs.

Moses Kyonda,  the Kisozi sub county LC3 chairperson had earlier asked for the extension of electricity to Isimba, Bubago,Ikaba, Budhuda, Nababirye and Kakuno villages in the sub county.

Kadaga later commissioned a four stance pit latrine at Kisozi trading centre where she cautioned the community and traders to promote hygiene and sanitation since it was expected to serve 500 homesteads and about 7,000 traders.

Kadaga said the area lacked a toilet facility and that the four stance water borne toilet the area had before was constructed under a donation from the Thailand government last year but the community was not able to use it because of water scarcity.

“There is a common belief that people in rural areas are unhygienic, I want you to challenge them by exhibiting a high standard of hygiene. It is for your own benefit because government will not beg you to do that,” she said.

Ngobi Mugote the area LC 1 chairperson was optimistic the habit of residents easing themselves in polythene bags and bushes would stop with the acquisition of the latrine facility.

“We had a challenge of flying toilets, the bushes and our gardens were full of human wastes but now with this new achievement, the community will have no excuse for improper disposal of human waste,” Mugote said.

He added that they had come up with a standing committee that will manage and promote sanitation and proper use of the facility.

It was constructed by Development Microfinance a financial institution in the area at sh 10 million.

Micheal Mawanda Muranga the managing director of the institution who is also the Igara East Constituency Member of Parliament said it was built because a feasibility study done revealed it was the major demand of the community.

He said it was part of their corporate social responsibility.
