Irresponsible media reporting, especially during the recent walk-to-work demonstrations, is to blame for the high fuel and commodity prices in the country, information and national guidance minister Mary Karooro Okurut has said.

Karooro was addressing a press conference at Hoima Resort Hotel on Thursday.

She said many investors left the country while those who were planning to come dragged their feet because of negative media reporting.

“The investors withdrew their investments, which reduced dollar flow in the country, causing the depreciation of the shilling,” Karooro said.

Karooro was on a country wide tour aimed at sensitising media practitioners about the need to give attention to government programmes instead of concentrating on entertainment and politics which she said was of little importance to the country.

She urged journalists to dedicate more time to developmental government programmes like universal education and National Agriculture Advisory Services, which people in rural areas are ignorant about.

Karooro said the current inflation was imported since the country depends more on imports and that it was a global issue and not only in Uganda.

She said the cabinet would disseminate information to the public to ensure that they are informed about each and every development in the country.

Karooro urged all districts in the country to open up websites that would be fed with information from both the districts and different ministries.

Meanwhile, Karooro, said the ministry was planning to rejuvenate public forums (Ebimeza) that were disbanded by the Government and Barazas’ to enable the public air out issues they deem developmental.

Hoima district chairman George Bagonza Tinkamanyire called for responsible media practice in spreading developmental information other than focusing on politics.
