A HITHERTO unimplemented ban on the movement of fuel tankers in the city center is to be revived over terrorism fears.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Ibin Ssenkumbi on Monday expressed fear that extremists could exploit the highly combustible fuel to cause mayhem.

“We directed that no fuel tanker should go through the city center during the day. The order was violated. Our position is that no such trucks will go through the city during the day,” Ssenkumbi stated.

There are hundreds of fuel stations in Kampala. Fuel-laden trucks have to weave through the traffic congestion to get to the stations. They carry diesel, petrol and kerosene all of which are flammable.

“This time we are ready to ensure that the regulation is adhered to. Whoever flouts it will be penalized,” Ssenkumbi told the press at Central Police Station in Kampala.

Other than being hijacked by terrorists for their selfish reasons, Ssenkumbi noted that they were contributing to hold-ups in the city. He also blamed some of the accidents in the city on the huge trucks.

This is the second time that the Police announce the order. About a year ago, a similar announcement was made but no follow up was made. But this time, Ssenkumbi insisted, culprits would have to pay for their mistakes.

In a related development, as the US marks 10 years since the terror attacks in which thousands died, the police in Kampala have warned of “celebratory attacks”.

Vital installations and entertainment centers could be targeted before or after the commemoration in US this weekend (Sunday), Ssenkumbi warned.
