Kasese can do something unique to tap business

EDITOR: On my recent trip to Kasese in July, I found the new mayor struggling to put the municipality in order. He wants a clean town and drivers of taxis to strictly use the taxi park.

He is also concerned about waste management, etc. What puzzled me is that business seems to have shifted from Kasese to somewhere else.

Crops no longer grow in the countryside partly because of human settlements. Food is brought to the markets from neighbouring Kabarole and Bushenyi districts and as a result food prices are very high.

The question is, how can we at least bring business home? We can do something unique in the country and could reap big from the middle class. For instance, we can embark on good infrastructure development. Houses in town should be built according to plan. We can organise tournaments like volleyball which is widely played in the country.

We can start bicycle race or revive boxing and golf. The people can be taught about waste management. Women groups can be taught agribusiness, tourism financing, natural resource development, health and family planning.

The mayor can even organise a forum for tertiary students during their holidays and they can contribute in different disciplines about what their town should look like. Kasese can then be advertised for what it can offer.
