Sugar shortage caused by greedy traders

I agree with President Museveni’s observations about the current sugar crisis in Uganda. It is caused by greedy and unscrupulous traders for their selfish ends.

I agree with President Museveni’s observations about the current sugar crisis in Uganda. It is caused by greedy and unscrupulous traders for their selfish ends.

The Government is also partly to blame because it has not taken up its mandate of protecting its citizens against exploitation by the greedy traders.

I implore the Ministry of Trade to take the matter up by sampling these traders who buy in bulk from the manufacturers, inspect their purchase invoices for the cost price and compare it with the selling price. Some of them are even using sugar as a bait to sell their other merchandise!

They hang notices on the stalls informing customers that if one picks a kilogram of sugar, one must also buy items worth sh5,000! A case in point is a prominent supermarket in Ntinda.

Much as Ugandans are enjoying a free market economy, the Government has full powers and mandate to protect her citizens against exploitation and any other forms of injustice.

The trade ministry should come in to regulate the traders because they are under its mandate and should comply with the Government’s policies.
