Most pupils in lower classes in government-aided primary schools in Pallisa district cannot read or write words in English and solve basic mathematics questions, a survey has shown.

A survey on literacy and numeracy competence among children aged six to 16 years, was carried out by UWEZO Uganda in 84 districts. It was launched last Thursday in Budaka district by Pallisa Civil Society Organisations’ Network.

It generated data on children’s literacy and numeracy abilities basing on the Primary Two curriculum content.

Literacy tests were used to find out the child’s ability to read words and sentences accurately.

Numeracy tests were developed with six levels that included recognition of numbers between one to nine, 11-99, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Speaking during the launch of the report, Budaka district vice-chairperson John Munghono, said the findings would be used to boost the primary school curriculum.

“The findings should be published and discussed using various media so that adaptable and community-owned interventions are designed”, said Munghono.

Fred Ejautene, the UWEZO district focal point officer said the report is intended to advocate for change in the education policy.

The report showed that most parents do not discuss issues concerning performance of their children with teachers.

The report, however, showed that absenteeism among teachers had reduced over the past two years.
