55 escape unhurt as Kampala-bound bus catches fire

NWOYA - Passengers travelling on a bus belonging to Nile Star Bus Company were on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, evacuated after it caught fire at Latoro on the Pakwach-Karuma highway in Nwoya District at around 11:00 am.

Police on Wednesday confirmed that the bus was completely burnt and passengers' properties worth millions of shillings were destroyed.

“A bus owned by Nile Star Bus Company, registration number, UBF 003Y, caught fire this morning, February 14, 2024, at Latoro along the Pakwach-Karuma highway in Nwoya District while en route to Kampala. Fortunately, all passengers were safely evacuated. However, the bus was completely burnt and passengers' properties worth millions of shillings were destroyed,” Police said in a statement on X.

At the time of the incident, the bus had 55 passengers on board.

The Police said the Nwoya territorial Traffic Police had commenced an investigation into the incident to determine the probable cause.

Responding to the Police statement, Samuel Woko Labeja who used the bus recently said, “I used this very bus on the night of January 28, 2024, from Arua to Kampala and it seemed to have issues. We stopped (twice) at Okollo and Pakwach as the crew tried to fix the problem. However, the driver and crew members were very professional and responsible throughout the journey.”
