While some homeowners prefer to have paving slabs on a small portion of the compound, others choose to have them cover the entire yard.

Ben Mitala, compound designer and gardener with Mitala classic compound designs says, paving slabs or stepping stones are trendy.

However, they should be installed by an experienced person for the design to come out well.

Also, be careful when choosing the grass. It should be a slow-growing lawn that is easy to maintain such that it doesn’t cover up the stones.

Level the compound well.

He adds that paving slabs come in different types, colours and sizes.

Joshua Twinomurinzi, another landscaper adds that those pieces should at least be two inches thick to avoid cracking or breaking and they should be installed well to avoid moving, sinking and sliding.

“If need be, dig 2cm or more in the ground depending on the thickness of the slabs,” he says. Thereafter, put sand or cement if you wish and add the stones.

With that, Twinomurinzi says, you can mow your lawn without having to work around the stones.

Mitala weighs in saying that preparation is key. Before laying the slabs, first draft a plan clearly showing the layout. You can also sample by arranging the paving stones to test the design.
