The first-year university student, whose name and photo has circulated on social media, was hit by a bullet while on a bus on Friday.
Kabila has been in power since 2001, at the helm of a regime widely criticised for corruption, repression and incompetence.
Several protesters were also reported to have been detained at the demonstration.

"This three-day strike is the result of what is happening here, the marginalisation of a region that is only asking for its daily bread."
Led by their chairperson, they claim they have tried to approach their bosses over the issue but in vain.
"The police are present and security has been deployed to manage the situation."
