The Uganda Police Force on Tuesday evening (July 28, 2020) released five Radio Simba presenters and singer Gerald Kiwewa who were arrested last week and were being investigated over promoting sectarianism.

The fate of Baba TV political host Basajja Mivule who was arrested on Monday (July 27, 2020) is however not yet known. Police had on Monday searched his home after he questioned on social media why the army leadership is dominated by people from the same region.

The six were released on police bond following a court order issued by Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Stella Amabirizi on Tuesday, directing the Inspector General of Police, Director Criminal Investigations Division and Commandant Special Investigations Unit to unconditionally releases them.

The four members of Bizonto comedy group (Julius Sserwanja also known as Kidomoole, Mbabaali Maliseeri (Uncle Luyuguumo) Sssaabakaaki Peter (Omuzinyuuzi) and Gold Ki Matono, also known as Opeto) were picked up from the Radio Simba offices alongside a radio presenter Peter Ssabakaaki and detained at the Special Investigations Unit in Kireka.

The Bizontos were also part of Radio Simba’s morning show dubbed Binsangawano popularly known for its satirical skits.

One of the recorded comedy skits released last week angered top government officials who ordered for their arrest and also investigations over promoting sectarianism.

Kiwewa was arrested last week by armed personnel who picked him from his home in Maganjo, Wakiso district.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, in an earlier interview, noted that Kiwewa was arrested following a complaint filed to the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) by Kayunga Woman MP and former State Minister Idah Nantaba over the 'Nantaba' song. Onyango had said they had opened inquiries vide GEF 442/2020.

However, after Nantaba denied filing the complaint, police made a U-turn. CID spokesperson, Charles Twine, later said it was the CID that had initiated the arrest.

On Monday (July 27, 2020), the Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo warned the media, and the politicians that the government was going to be very decisive and firm with anyone resurrecting sectarianism tendencies.

While addressing the press at the Uganda Media Centre, Opondo said: “Our history shows that we had tribes killing fellow tribe mates and government is not going to relax on anyone resurrecting sectarianism tendencies in the country. We don’t want to go down a path our neighbours have gone, especially with no specific proof.”
