KAMPALA - President Yoweri Museveni has said they have identified 16 groups that will benefit from the newly-created sh86b fund countrywide.
Museveni said this on Thursday evening at State House Nakasero while addressing journalists just after speaking about his countrywide tour to meet and sensitise Ugandans on job and wealth creation.
He said the groups include bodaboda riders, women entrepreneurs, carpenters, welders, market vendors, youth leaders, persons with disabilities, produce dealers, tailors, media practitioners, musicians, comedians, fishermen, mechanics, hairdressers, taxi operators, and restaurant workers.
"So we shall put a Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO) for each of these 16 groups for the whole district and we expect all the people in that activity in that district to join. And the government will contribute to each SACCO. Therefore, that excuse of lack of startup capital will end," Museveni said.
He said they will also create another fund for local government leaders because they have been suffering under the Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) initiative.
"When they go for OWC (inputs) they are chased away; that they are leaders and therefore can't share OWC (inputs). So we shall create a SACCO for them. Therefore, this time we want to really wake up and fight underdevelopment which leads to underconsumption," he said.
