Association Uganda University Sports (AUUS) has withdrawn membership from four institutions because they have accumulated a debt of over $2500 (about sh9m) in affiliation fees for the last three years.
The decision means two time champions MUBS, two time finalists Nkumba, Busitema and Kampala International University will not be allowed to compete in the usually exciting University Football League (UFL).
AUUS president Peninnah Kabenge confirmed the development saying that the universities can only be re-admitted and allowed to compete if they pay up.
"Unless you are in our good books financially (in this case), we cannot allow you to take part in any activities organized by AUUS," Kabenge said.
When contacted, general secretary Samuel Akwech, who was not aware of AUUS decision by press time said, "it is unfortunate but we shall have no option but replace the universities if they have not cleared by February 28," Akwech said.
The immediate sports event the universities will miss is the University Football League (UFL) because the 2017 edition starts on March 6.
