Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) plans to exploit home advantage maximally as the sixth edition of the East Africa Local Association Sports and Cultural Association (EALASCA) Games gets underway on Tuesday.
The week-long regional competitions, geared at fostering cooperation among the citizens of the East African Community, will be held at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
The championship will involve visiting teams from East Africa Community city authority teams in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
The event which concludes with the finals on Saturday will involve competitions in soccer, athletics, basketball, netball, volleyball and darts. Prior to the start of the games, Kenya County Assembly councillors take on their KCCA counterparts in a friendly soccer match Tuesday.
Kigali are defending champions of the games held in Bujumbura, Burundi last year.
While receiving visiting delegations, KCCA Executive Director Jennifer Musisi said that the sports events are part of the build up to the Kampala City Festival due on October 5.
“I am happy that Kampala is hosting these important games ahead of the Kampala Festival. I wish all our visitors and citizens good moments in our city,” she said. East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) Deputy Secretary General Jean Claud Nsengiyumva is among the regional dignitaries who had arrived ahead of the games on Monday.
