Can I be re-admitted?
I was a B. Com student at Makerere University but was dismissed after failing to raise a 2.0 cumulative grade average in three consecutive semesters. I would like to repeat the course without the university showing any course unit as ‘retake’ on my transcript. Do I need to re-apply given that I like that course?
Fatumah Nakatudde, a deputy academic registrar at Makerere University, says you blundered by continuing with the same course even after it turned out hard for you. You should have applied for change of course before you were discontinued. The university would then have given you another course of your choice.
You can re-apply and be given another course, not the one you failed.
What is actuarial science all about?
I discovered that actuarial science is offered in Uganda but do not know much about the career prospects and the profession in Uganda. Are there actuaries in Uganda?
Actuarial science is offered at the Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics, Makerere University.
According to Dyson Maswere, a lecturer at the institute, the course trains students to apply mathematical and statistical methods to manage financial risk in various areas of business. To qualify for admission, one must have passed pure mathematics at A’level with at least grade C. Other relevant subjects are economics, geography, physics and chemistry.
Dr. Yeko Mwanga, the head of Makerere University department of statistical methods, says graduates of actuarial science are employed in stock exchange markets, pension schemes like National Social Security Fund and in-house pension schemes of various organisations. Others are employed in the insurance industry, specialising in either life and health insurance or property and casualty insurance.
