Mbale municipal council yesterday voted to interdict the town clerk, Fred Bukeni Gyabi.

Two thirds of the council, presided over by he speaker, Davis Mwaule, voted for the suspension after a day-long debate. This followed complaints from the local government ministry that had led to suspension of Gyabi for three months.

The council’s decision left Bukeni with one chance to defend himself before the District Service Commission.

The deputy mayor, Hajjat Jamila Naleba, moved the motion. She accused him of gross misconduct, illegal transactions and failure to implement council resolutions.

Bukeni, a former deputy chief administrative officer of Mbarara, was also accused of personalising his office and diverting council funds.

The charged councillor also said Bukeni had in 2001 connived with Super Star Auctioneers to defraud the council of sh4m in a purported commission payment.
