KAWANDA Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) is working out ways of establishing an industrial park that would do research for farmers and investors in agro-processing.
“We want to allocate land to investors in agro-processing in the park so that we bring together farmers, investors and researchers to carry out research,†the chairman of the National Agricultural Research Laboratories Institute, Dr. James Semwanga, said.
Semwanga said the research is aimed at improving what the farmers are producing and the investors processing.
He said it also aims at developing new products for the market
“For example, we have got a soil research unit. One of the items we look at are biological agents like nitrogen- fixing bacteria that can be produced commercially and sold to farmers who grow legumes,†he said at a party for outgoing KARI director Dr. Mathias Magunda.
“Another example is food processing. We have got a bio sciences research unit that provides research results for new food products. We can avail the farmers and the companies immediate results,†Semwanga said.
