THE Police in Mityana district are holding six people for allegedly trying to murder three traders. The deputy officer in charge of criminal investigations, David Agi, named the suspects as James Mayanja, Mande Lujumba, Fred Nganda, Antonio Kigozi, Fred Lukyamuzi, Robert Kabuga and Florence Naluggya, all of Katiko village in Busimbi sub-county.
Agi said the six, together with their colleagues who are yet to be arrested, staged a roadblock at Katiko on Friday, and attacked Richard Kisekka, Edward Kisitu and Walusimbi who were transferring pigs on a pick-up truck.
â€œThey held pangas and logs and assaulted the traders, cut the pigs and set the truck on fire. However, one person had tipped us by phone and we arrived in time to rescue the traders.
â€œBy the time we got to the scene, they were about to burn the traders too,â€ he added.
Agi said the traders had over sh200,000 which was also stolen.
The traders were admitted at St. Maryâ€™s Hospital in Mityana. Some sustained injuries on the head, neck and the back, while others had their ears cut off.
According to the investigations, no pig had been stolen from any of the villages nearby.
â€œThe traders travelled through Kireku, Miseebe and Katiko collecting the pigs they had bought. However, they got stuck somewhere and they later had to travel at night, All the homes where the seven pigs were bought are known,â€ Agi said.
The district Police commander, Moses Otaala Obbo, said the suspects will answer to charges of robbery, assault, malicious damage and attempted murder.
