The chief union negotiator in talks with South Africa’s state power firm said on Friday ahead of talks with Eskom he was still hopeful of averting a strike next week that could paralyse the economy.

The threat of a power shutdown in Africa’s biggest economy has helped drive up prices of platinum and palladium and to push the rand currency to a three-week low.

“We received phones calls from Eskom management indicating a willingness to settle, they may have had a change of heart and want to discuss their offer further,” Paris Mashego, the National Union of Mineworker’s chief negotiator at Eskom told Reuters.

“Our attitude is that we are not negotiating for a dispute, or a strike but for a settlement.”
