Ask the Doctor with Dr. Paul Semugoma
I tested HIV-positive but want a child with my boyfriend who is HIV-negative. How can I get an HIV-negative child without infecting my boyfriend?
YOU can get pregnant without infecting your boyfriend or child. First plan with your obstetrician, HIV/AIDS doctor, partner and a counsellor.
The lower the amount of HIV in your blood, the less the chances of your baby being infected.
Your doctor and obstetrician will discuss and put you on HIV drugs which are safe during pregnancy. Always use a condom so that you do infect your partner.
Use a syringe without the needle to put the sperms as far up in the vagina as possible.
Your obstetrician can advise you on your fertile days. Follow your doctors’ recommendation on delivery.
The baby is given ARVs at birth to prevent infection. Do not breastfeed.
