FIRST, June 9 was Heroes’ Day. Second, it was her 27th birthday, and, more importantly, it became their wedding day! Flora Namutiibwa Baite of Makerere University Walter Reed Project and daughter of maverick politician and Busoga kingdom minister Baite Munobwa walked down the aisle with hubby Dr. Grace Muzanye of Makerere University Case Western Tuberculosis project in what came to be a case of Busoga ‘conquering’ Buganda.
For choosing her day right, Flora was rewarded with keys to a Honda CRV valued at sh22m from her husband as a birthday present! It swept her off her feet and, as she dived for her man’s lips, Busoga elders gasped for breathe and openly murmured their discomfort at the secrets of the bedroom brought into the open.
The ceremony was a doctor’s affair. At one time, I feared the entire medical staff at Mulago Hospital had abandoned patients to attend the party. Over 300 guests were ferried in two buses from Budondo in Jinja and Ivukula in Namutumba district in a peaceful replica of Busoga invading Buganda. Their piercing ululations and dances alongside the Kika Dance Troupe were such a spectacle, you imagined they were at Busoga’s Nakabango hills, dancing for the Kyabazinga.
“My daughters only marry quality men. I veto all their prospective suitors before giving my blessings,†a beaming Munobwa noted. “Dr Muzanye, like others before, has passed with flying colours. But ‘foreigners’ are finishing my daughters! I challenge any man from Ivukula (his home village) to prove his worth.â€
Meals done with, DJ Alberto of Amsta Hyper Sounds took centre stage. That is when we realised that dancing is not a forte for many doctors. They shied from the dance floor.
