arrived before him and kept thinking he wouldn’t turn up. When he arrived, he was a bit reserved, but we picked up and we talked about campus and social life as well as the beauty of the restaurant. He is a friendly gentleman with a sharp sense of humour.

We had a lovely time. The most memorable incident was when he wiped the swing’s seat with his handkerchief to ensure that that my dress would not get soiled. Did Joseph tell you about any woman in his life? (Frowns) How does that come in? That is the last thing I would think about. It didn’t even occur to me that his relationships would be worth talking about.

Maybe if we went for another date we would have a lot more to talk about. Were you disappointed in any way? (Pauses for a few seconds in deep thought). Yeah….to some extent I was. I believe I was smartly dressed for the date because people kept complimenting my dress even in the taxi. But can you imagine he said nothing about my dress! He only complimented my bangles and necklaces.

My bangles didn’t count to me as much, but at least he should have noticed my dress or hairstyle. Uh! He also didn’t ask for my full name. Does that mean you would frown if Joseph asked you for a deeper love beyond mere friendship? (Stunned, then laughs) I don’t think it would work out. I still feel my heart is somewhere else. Maybe I haven’t met the man who would my own heart for life. We can remain friends and, by the way, I wouldn’t mind going out for another date with him if he invited me.

“I had to be careful not to bite too big a chunk that I might fail to chew..”

was tense initially, but the relaxed ambience of the restaurant put me at ease. Evelyn arrived a few minutes before me. When we picked up conversation, it flowed smoothly from our private lives to campus life.

We discussed our career ambitions and she shared with me her plans of becoming a development consultant. Did you ask her about past relationships? No. I felt it was too early to probe her deeply along those lines. Some of these things have to be taken step by step and not all at once. I had to be careful not to bite too big a chunk that I might fail to chew.

But still, our interaction was sweet. She had a smile that kept me at ease. Her talk was punctuated with giggling here and there. Did I mention anything about her attire? Yeah, she was strikingly smart. I even asked her how much time she took to match the colours of her bangles, earrings and dress.

Besides this, Evelyn is quite knowledgeable about politics, leisure and academics. My only problem with her was lack of argument. I really love serious debates and intellectual arguments, but I missed out on that.

I tried to provoke her to either argue or disagree with my opinions, but she always crossed over to my side. (laughter) I like it when a lady challenges me and makes me look at issues differently, but that wasn’t the case with her. Any memorable romantic experience? Yeah….. sitting with her on the swing chair while the evening breeze passed by was surely romantic.

If Evelyn flashed her smile and said
‘Joseph I want us to relate beyond friendship. I love you,’ what would you do? (Stunned, shakes his head and laughs loudly). Wow. But people don’t fall in love in one evening. An ideal relationship must grow; otherwise, it would be mere infatuation.

I would let her understand that we need to give each other time and not rush because there is more to learn beyond the physical outlook. I need at least three months of quality time to understand her.
