CHRISTMAS is a season of decorating and giving your home a new look. Transforming your home should be part of the celebrations. Apart from the Christmas tree, here is a clue on how to decorate your home for a new look at an affordable price.
Instead of buying new scatter cushions, you could invest in new cushion covers. These are available at Dong Fang on Luwum Street at sh5,000 and Nina Interiors on Jinja Road, at sh15,000.
If you want to buy new scatter cushions, go for a variety in the basement of Avemar Shopping Arcade. They cost sh5,000.
Chair backs are outdated. You can add colour to your sofa set using colourful scatter cushions.
If the chairs are torn or worn out, consider changing their fabric. The cost of this procedure varies, depending on what fabric you choose and the size of your chairs. Nina Interiors and Tunakopesha on Metropole House on Entebbe Road offer this service.
To get the job done, you will need to purchase upholstery material available from sh8,000 a metre and above from the up market furniture marts like Biplous on Kampala Road and Nina Interiors.
The pale wooden furniture can be given sheen by varnishing it with clear wood varnish. The varnish restores the neat and beautiful appearance of the furniture.
Consider having a flower vase for the dining table and living room. Roots, a gift shop at Garden City, has a glamourous collection of vases from sh25,000 onwards. There are cheaper flower vases at Rusadia on Bombo Road at sh5,000.
For ornaments, you could add an item or two to change the arrangement to give your interior a new look.
When arranging ornaments, avoid the clutter because however beautiful your items are, their beauty will disappear if you do not have order.
The bookcases should be free of paper and books to create space for the ornaments.
We all have photographs that capture special memories in our life. Use these to celebrate the gift of family that you have.
Use photo frames that double as clocks to place your photographs. Photo frames are available from sh1,000 depending on the size from Gift Corner at Ivory Plaza on Wilson Street.
Get rid of the torn curtains. You will be amazed at the transformation you have with new curtains. The sunshine will come to your bedroom.
Curtain material is available from sh8,000, at Avemar shopping Arcade basement on Luwum Street and Dong Fang. More shopping spots for curtain material are available on Nkrumah Road.
Bring life to your bedroom by hanging colourful paintings on the wall. Batiks are great or a picture of a beautiful landscape. Batiks are available from sh15,000 at Craft Centre on Kampala Road and Craft Village at the National Theatre.
Invest in a new pair of bedsheets. These can be bought at shsh40,000 a pair for a single bed and sh48,000for a double bed at Dong Fang.
For a colourful bedroom, there is an option for a bedroom set which includes; a duvet, pillowcases and curtains. This goes for over sh1m at Wynstock at Uganda House.
To capture an identity for your home, invest in scented candles. These create a homely atmosphere that is welcoming, warm and cozy. There is no room for the stale stench in your home.
Complete the new look with a well-decorated tree on which to place the Christmas cards you have received.
Have a merry Christmas.
