THE World Food Programme (WFP) has donated 698 metric tons of relief food to the 47,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in Lira municipality.
The 14,000 bags valued at US$300,000 (over sh575m) was handed over to the Minister of State for Disaster preparedness, Christine Amongin Aporu, for delivery to Lira district authorities.
The IDPs, camped in various parts in the municipality, fled their villages following intensified raids by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels.
A statement from the WFP Uganda office said the IDPs had limited coping mechanisms and were heavily relying on their relatives for food and other necessities.
“Malnutrition has been observed among the children, and the lack of adequate and regular supplies of food will most likely lead to a precarious situation,†Edward Kallon, the WFP Uganda deputy country director, said.
Kallon handed over the food to Aporu on Tuesday at the district headquarters. The hand-over was witnessed by the district chairman, Dr. Charles Odwe, his cabinet and the chairman of the district disaster management committee.
Also present were Martin Owor, the assistant commissioner for disaster management and the WFP vulnerability assessment and mapping officer, Ernest Mutanga.
