OYAM -The community in Kamdini and Karuma are searching for the body of the LC1 chairperson of Amenye Western Ward village in Kamdini town council, Oyam district. Jacob Ocen was reportedly among the three people who are believed to have drowned in River Nile near Karuma.

Ocen, 38, his pregnant wife Jennifer Akello, 22, and their guest Denis Okello were returning home when their canoe capsized.

The bodies of Akello and Okello were recovered several km from the location where the canoe is believed to have capsized.

The accident occurred on Friday when the couple was returning home from Kiryandongo where Ocen had taken his six months pregnant wife for antenatal care.

Bosco Ogwang Atoli, the LCV councilor of Kamdini said they believe the family was attacked by hippos on their way back home. He said Ocen was an experienced swimmer who could have swam back to shore if he was not injured.

He said the two bodies of Akello and Okello were handed over to the bereaved families for burial in Kungu, Apac district.

Oyam District Police Commander (DPC), Victor Saasi Kule confirmed the incident saying the search is still on for Ocen.
