Police in Mpigi district on Monday arrested an LCI chairperson together with his secretary for defence over the murder of a 23-year-old man, whose body was found abandoned at a trading centre.
Vincent Ssebunya Kamya, 32, the chairperson of Ssekiwunga in Kiringente sub-county, Mpigi district was arrested with the secretary for defence, Siraje Mugobansonga, 45 and threeother residents.
Joseph Turya, the Katonga region Police spokesperson, said Ssebunya, Mugobansonga and three other residents identified as Joshua Konshenga, 24, Ashiraf Mulindwa, 23 and Majid Kabulwa, 22, led a mob, which lynched Peter Lutalo, 23, after they arrested him with stolen items.
Turya said they arrested SSebunya and his colleagues to help Police with investigations.
Bosco Mukisa, a resident, said Lutalo was a known thief, who on many occasions had been arrested by Police, but later released. However, on Sunday night, his luck ran out after he was allegedly nabbed with a music system, television set, clothes and other household items, which he had stolen from one of the residencies in the area.
Lutalo was attacked by the mod, which hit him with stones and sticks. He died from the injuries and his body was abandoned in Ssekiwunga trading centre.
Turya condemned the acts of mob justice and urged residents to always report suspects to Police instead of taking the law in their hands.
The suspects are currently detained at Mpigi Central Police, while Lutalo’s body was taken to Mulago Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.
