Museveni in Addis Ababa for 33rd IGAD Summit

President Yoweri Museveni has today arrived in the Ethiopian Capital Addis Ababa for the 33rd extra ordinary summit of the Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

The Ethiopia State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Birtukan Ayano Dadi and Uganda’s Ambassador to Addis Ababa Rebecca Otengo received the President at Bole International Airport.

IGAD is an eight-country trade bloc in Africa. It includes governments from the Horn of Africa, Nile Valley and the African Great Lakes

The summit is expected to deliberate and decide on the outcomes of the IGAD council of ministers 65th Extra – ordinary session. It is also expected to adopt the communiqué of the 33rd extra-ordinary IGAD assembly of the heads of state and government in a closed session.

According to reports, the leaders are expected to discuss South Sudan peace deal and Eritrea’s rejoining of the trade bloc. Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who is the current chairperson of the IGAD, will chair the meeting.

Eritrea will rejoin the IGAD and South Sudanese parties are expected to sign the last revitalized peace agreement.
