Just like in 2016 in Tunisia, Eva Magala produced the best individual score for team Uganda as the All Africa Challenge Trophy ended at the Achimota Golf Club in Ghana on Friday.
Her gross score of 248 over 54 holes had her finishing 7th overall, one stroke ahead of team captain Irene Nakalembe who finished in tenth; with rookie Martha Babirye’s 254 gross placing her 15th out of over 54 golfers from 18 countries that took part.
In the team event, Magala and Nakalembe’s total of 493 gross had Uganda finishing fourth overall behind record winners South Africa who defended the championship, Tanzania and Kenya who finished second and third respectively.
The Ugandans who had targeted a third place finish as the left for the championship came short of their target by 7 strokes. Tanzania, who fielded Hawa Wanyeche, Angel Robinson and Hussein Madina was nine strokes off the winner, finishing second overall.
Each country was represented by three golfers, with the best two scorers on each team contributing to the team total score in the three rounds.
South Africa who has dominated the event since its introduction in 1992 won the event for their 13 AACT trophy. The champions were led by Myeki Zethu who was also joint best individual alongside Tanzania’s Hussein Madina with (237gross), Hall Casandra and Vad Der Watt Lenanda.
Uganda started the opening day in fifth place and improved to fourth which they maintained until the end.
The three are now joined by Wendy Angudeyo, Peace Kabasweka and Sheila Kesiime who took three wins out of the top six in the AACT supporters’ tournament, in the Ghana Ladies Open, September 2-4.
