Makerere VC candidates set for public presentation

Candidates vying for the Makerere University Vice Chancellor job, will Thursday make presentations of their vision for the university to the public.

The three candidates vying for the Universities are former presidential aspirant current deputy vice-chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, former presidential aspirant Prof Venansius Baryamureeba, and Prof Edward Kirumira, the principal of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

According to Irene Ovonji, the chairperson Vice Chancellor search Committee, the three candidates will also interact with stakeholders and respond to questions from the public.

The public as stakeholders of the University has been invited for the function that will take place at the University Main Hall from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Each candidate will be offered 40 minutes to present and answer questions from the public.

The first twenty minutes will be for presentation and 20 for questions and discussion from the public.

The moderator will then wrap up the discussions in half an hour’s time.

THE CANDIDATES

Prof Venansius Baryamureeba

Baryamureba was born on May 18, 1969 in Ibanda District, Uganda. He is a distinguished consultant, academic, researcher, manager, leader and entrepreneur. He is a Professor of Computer Science and recipient of several awards.

He holds a B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science among other qualifications. He began his working career at Makerere University where he served as Director, Dean and finally Vice Chancellor from September 2013 until September 2015 before moving on to start Uganda Technology and Management University where he served as Vice Chancellor until September 2015.

In 2016 he contested for the post of President of Uganda.

Baryamureeba is the 5th born in a family of 6 children. He was born in Kasharara, Kagongo, Ibanda District, Uganda. His parents are the late Pius Kabukure and Florence Bitwakakye.

He went to Buryansungwe Primary School, St. Leo’s College Kyegobe for Secondary Education, Makerere University and University of Bergen for M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science. Professor Baryamureeba has two daughters, Daniella Kobugabe and Zephyr Katusiime Kabakama.

Prof. Edward Kirumira

He is the Principal of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Makerere University and was the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences for eight years from 2003 prior to which he headed the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, for five years.

He is a Professor of Sociology with interest in population and reproductive health.

Born on July 15, 1958, Prof. Kirumira trained at Makerere University, Exeter University (UK), the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and the University of Copenhagen Denmark in collaboration with Harvard University, US.

He has special interest in Population and Reproductive Health with over 20 years of HIV/AIDS research and programming.

Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe

Prof Nawangwe is the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration and is responsible for the planning, budgeting and development of the university.

He is the former acting Principal, College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), Makerere University. He has also on several occasions acted as DVC (AA) of Makerere University.

Prior to that, he was the Dean of Faculty of Technology (2002-2009) and Head of the Department of Architecture from its inception in 1989 to 2002.

Prof Nuwangwe has chaired several University committees, including the University Research, Administrative and Financial Reforms Committee.

He is currently external Examiner at Nairobi University, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and Oslo School of Architecture.
