One person died and four others were seriously injured in an accident which occurred on Saturday morning at Kibindiizi, Mpigi town council along the Kampala-Masaka Highway.

The accident involved a lorry number UAT 713Y that was coming from Lwera loaded with sand and the Canter number UAW 123C which was heading to Masaka from Kampala.

The accident occurred at around 4:55am.

According to Fabian Betubiza, the Katonga Region traffic officer, the deceased was identified as Henry Maggwa, 30, a resident of Nateete a Kampala suburb. He was a passenger in the lorry carrying sand.

The injured were identified as Zumu Bakari, 28, a resident of Wakiso and the driver of the Canter truck, his co-driver Muzafar Ssekandi, 22, a resident of Wakiso, George Bakakyi the driver of the lorry carrying sand and his turn boy Pantus Kibuuka, 17, a resident of Nateete.

According to Betubiza, Police suspects that the driver for the lorry was dozing when he drove out of his lane and collided with the Canter.

The critically injured were rushed to Mpigi Health Center IV for first aid and later rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital for further treatment while the body of the deceased was taken to Mulago Hospital mortuary.

The wreckages of the vehicles were towed to Mpigi Central Police Station and according to Betubiza, Police has started investigations into the deadly incident.

The Masaka-Kampala Highway has experienced a wave of accidents in the past month which has left scores dead and others nursing injuries.

Many have blamed the accidents on the narrowness of the highway while others blame the spike in accidents on human error.
