THE Omusinga, Charles Wesley Mumbere, the Bamba and Bakonzo king, has blasted a splinter group of the Rwenzururu veterans. He warned the group against creating confusion in the monarch.
“I am the leader of the Rwenzururu struggle. This you must bear in mind always,†the Omusinga said. The Bamba and Bakonzo cultural leader recently summoned the members of the splinter group led by Regio Kyakunukire to his palace in Kasese town.
“Rather than creating disunity among the people, you should instead help the Government to protect the Rwenzori Mountains,†he said. Mumbere noted that the forests on the mountain had been affected by rebel activity for over 40 years, adding that it was important that the forests are allowed to flourish again.
The forests were used by the Rwenzururu fighters led by late Isaya Mukirania, the father of Mumbere between 1962 and 1982. Later the National Resistance Movement fighters briefly used the forests, followed another Rwenzururu splinter group.
Other groups that used the mountain as a hide-out were the National Liberation of Uganda and rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces. Each of the rebel groups poached elephants, monkeys and chimpanzees for food.
“We shall not entertain any more destruction of the forests. If you hear of any such people planning to destabilise us again, you inform the Government,†the Omusinga directed. He warned that the splinter group’s divergent mind could be used by enemies of peace and unity.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Kyakunukire denied that there was such a group and said some ‘bad elements’ in the Obusinga were trying to create a situation that was non-existent.
“I want to confirm our loyalty to you,†Kyakunukire said, as he prostrated before Mumbere.
