EDITOR—I have read that President Museveni has dismissed the proposal to scrap student welfare in public universities in order to double intake.
I think the President’s decision is unfortunate because the number of students benefiting from government sponsorship is very small and the idea should have been welcome.
A similar system works well in Kenya where government-sponsored students pay for their accommodation and meals. I appeal to the ministry of education to help poor students who perform well to get assistance from this programme.
Government sponsorship is benefiting rich students from good schools! if the government’s concern is to make higher education more accessible, poor students need to be helped.
