FORMER national golf champion Deo Akope fancies his chances of following up a hard earned victory in the Shell Diesel Extra tournament in Fort Portal in July with another in the Mbarara Open that tees off tomorrow.
Akope edged out homeboys Stephen Kasaija and Joseph Mugisha in a playoff in Fort Portal to end Kasaija’s unbeaten run on the home course.
Akope, who ranks joint third in the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play championship, is eager to move a step ahead this weekend.
“I have always played well on the Mbarara course. I have to go for it (victory) because I have to catch up in the championship,” Akope said.
Akope, seeking a third UGU victory, will not only have to contend with championship favourites Kasaijja, Denis Anguyo, Godfrey Mande, Charles Yokwe and Amos Kamya but also old foe Stephen ‘Tiger Woods’ Birungi who returned from a self imposed semi-retirement last month.
The 36-hole tournament sponsored by Nile Bank is expected to attract over 150 golfers from Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja, Mbarara, Kabale, Fort Portal, Lira, Arua and Masindi.
