Doreen Adengo, a seasoned Ugandan architect, has died after reportedly battling cancer.

Frank Matovu, a member of the Uganda Design Community of which Adengo was a part, announced her death.

He said Adengo, owner of Adengo Architecture, passed away on July 22.

Further details regarding the vigil, prayers, and funeral arrangements would be "shared soon", added Matovu.

Adengo was a registered architect both in the US and in Uganda.

After completing her undergraduate and graduate studies at the Catholic University (Bachelor of Science in Architecture) and Yale (Master of Architecture), she worked for design firms in London, Washington DC, and New York.

She later founded Adengo Architecture in 2015.

Her practice ranged from the design of furniture and buildings to research and advocacy focusing on the urban and regional scales.

She had also helped produce exhibits and workshops exploring Ugandan urbanism and architecture at the Goethe-Zentrum Kampala and the Architecture Museum of the Technical University Munich.

Adengo also taught at The New School and Pratt Institute in New York, the University of Johannesburg’s Graduate School of Architecture, and was recently teaching at Uganda Martyrs University.

Catherine Ruhweza, who was Adengo’s classmate at Gayaza High School, said they were saddened by her death.

“She loved architecture so much and her death is a shock to us,” said Ruhweza.

In one of her maiden interviews on BBC in 2014, Adengo described what had led to her biggest career leap.

“Around the time I started my practice in Uganda, I was featured on BBC’s First Person series in 2014," Adengo later said.

"At the time, the BBC was not really airing positive news coming out of Africa, so when it aired in the US and the UK and on BBC World Service’s Focus on Africa, I quickly became known in Kampala.”
