Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who is undergoing treatment in a hospital in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, felt "extremely devastated" after learning of the death of outspoken Muslim cleric Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata.

Muzaata, 58, died at International Hospital Kampala (IHK) on Friday after spending nearly two weeks at the facility receiving treatment after developing health complications.

It is understood that the controversial political commentator, who has been overtly critical of those who attack the Muslim faith, developed hypertension recently.

"The news of the demise of Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata Batte has reached me here at my sickbed at the Nairobi Hospital and I feel extremely devastated," said Lukwago in a message posted on his Facebook page.

"Life is nothing else but vanity," read part of the post, which he concluded with: "Inna Lillahi wa inna illaihi Rajihuuna".

It was not immediately clear whether Muzaata will be interred Saturday, as per the Islamic funeral custom of usually burying the dead within 24 hours of their passing.

On the burial arrangements, Saturday Vision quoted Sheikh Muhamood Kibaate, the Kibuli Muslim faction deputy supreme mufti, as saying that "we shall inform the public once the arrangements are out".

Meanwhile, Lukwago is himself battling for his life at Nairobi Hospital where he is undergoing intensive treatment. He is suffering from acute anaphylaxis.

The 50-year-old politician and lawyer has remained positive he will pull through.

"I am still struggling, but I will be fine," he said earlier this week when contacted on phone for an update on his condition.

Lukwago, who is seeking to retain his position as Kampala Lord Mayor in next year's elections, had to put this political quest on hold after falling sick, a situation that required him to fly to Nairobi for extended treatment.

Before his transfer to Nairobi Hospital, Lukwago was initially admitted at Aga Khan University Hospital after he was referred by his doctors at Rubaga and Mulago Hospitals in Kampala.

Anaphylaxis is described by health experts as a severe allergic reaction to venom, food, or medication. Most cases are caused by a bee sting or eating foods that are known to cause allergies, such as peanuts or tree nuts. In severe cases, it leads to shock, which can be fatal if not treated.
