21 remanded over Lira chaos

The Magistrate declined the group from taking plea, saying that the charges were capital in nature and only tried by the High Court.

LIRA - The Chief Magistrates Court in Lira has charged and remanded 21 people over aggravated robbery, assault and causing bodily harm.

Thirteen of the suspects were juveniles and were remanded to Gulu Remand Home whereas the eight adults were remanded to Amolatar Prison.

The group appeared before Grade One Magistrate Susan Adelo, Thursday (December 3, 2020).

Reading the charges to the suspects, the Magistrate declined the group from taking plea, saying that the charges were capital in nature and only tried by the High Court.

"Carefully listen to the charges but don't plea against them for my court has no jurisdiction to try the same," Adelo said.

Prosecution asserts that the accused and others still at large on November 12, 2020 at Obote Avenue in the Lira City robbed a Techno spark phone, sh10,000 cash, a wallet containing National and school ID, ATM card, passport size photos, all Valued at sh510,000, the property of L/AIP Ambrose Besigye and that during the said robbery, they caused bodily harm to Besigye.  

The case was adjourned to January 12, 2021, for mention.
