There is a need for more women to take up leadership in sports

Makerere University will host the second annual women in sports conference with the aim to address issues that work against women.

The organisers aim to create a platform where women in sports in Uganda can express themselves, share ideas on how to progress their mandate in their respective sporting areas, and gain a united voice.

There is a need for more women to take up leadership in sports and also leaders ought to inspire a new generation through this platform.

"I think this is very key because there is a whole leadership gap between the leaders like Peninah Kabenge, Beatrice Ayikoru, Rosette Meya, Hadija Namanda, and us," event organiser Mavita Ali said.

To achieve this, they need to encourage more participation.

"We are going to talk about the participation of women in regards to seeing so many women's teams reaching the highest level in sport. Women have represented Uganda at the highest level even more than men but why can't this be replicated, why aren't more women getting access to sports," Ali argues.

The conference has attracted quite the keynote speakers including Beatrice Ayikoru the world athletics council member and UAF general secretary she will be joined by UN Women deputy country representative Adekemi Ndieli, Rugby Africa vice president Andrew Owor and basketball superstar Claire Lamunu among others.

The event will be streamed live on Score Beyond's Facebook page for those who want to participate.
