19-yr-old caught stealing from hospital patients

Security at Mukono Church of Uganda Hospital arrested a 19-year-old woman who was caught on CCTV cameras stealing a patient's property.

Rev. Henry Katumba, the head of health services in Mukono diocese identified the suspect as Brenda Atukunda, a resident of Lugazi in Buikwe district.

Katumba says that after getting constant complaints from both patients and hospital staff about the theft of their property, they decided to install CCTV cameras which have since been recording footage of people stealing from the hospital.

"After getting the reports of stolen property, we review the footage and print out the pictures of the people whom we get stealing. We have been searching and arresting the thieves one by one," he said.

Katumba said that Atukunda has been charged with theft at Mukono Police Station.

Moses Ssekitoleko the hospital administrator said that on October 24, one of the patients left her bag with her daughter as she had entered the doctor's examination room and by the time she came back, sh100,000 and a phone were missing from the bag.

Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, we saw a woman stealing from it. Fortunately, from our camera room, we saw Atukunda who resembled the person who was recorded stealing, entering the hospital.

After her arrest, Atukunda confessed that she was the one in the footage and she revealed the other times she entered and stole from the hospital.

Atukunda is currently being held at Mukono Police Station pending prosecution.
