Tanzania's newly elected "Mr Clean" President, Benjamin Mkapa, voluntarily announced a full list of his assets. The move was seen as the first step in Mkapa's declared campaign to stamp out corruption, a key issue in the election which brought him to power.
Mkapa owned two houses, a bungalow in Dar es Salaam, and another in his home town of Masasi, southern Tanzania, an undeveloped farm and four cars, including a Mercedes Benz.
