The partnership is to sensitise Muslim communities on preventable diseases.

The Ministry of Health has partnered with the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council-UMSC to promote health education, a move to fight non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, cancer and blood pressure, among others.

The partnership is to sensitise Muslim communities on preventable diseases.

This was revealed at a workshop held at the health ministry headquarters in Kampala.

It was attended by Muslim clerics, including the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, regional and district khadhis, imams and sheikhs.

UMSC agreed to use its structure to sensitise the communities about preventable diseases.

Diana Atwine, the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health, said her ministry spends 75% of its budget on buying drugs to treat diseases that can be prevented.

Sheikh Mubajje welcomed the suggestion and assured the health ministry that religion can have an impact on disease, mortality, mobility, behaviour and lifestyle.
