Today in History: November 23, 1990

The Chairman and Managing Director of the Coffee Marketing Board (CMB), Mr. Alfred Mubanda revealed that the board would be phased out in favour of a limited liability company, effective from January 1991. He was briefing Prime Minister, Dr Samson Kisekka who had paid a visit to the Bugolobi coffee plant in Kampala. Mr. Mubanda said the new system once instituted, would be effective for 10 years, during which farmers would be assisted directly.

 Living wage announced 

November 23, 1996: The Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Service Dr. Eric Adriko announced that government would pay a living wage to civil servants from July 1996. Dr. Adriko was presenting a policy statement to the National Resistance Council (NRC) on the remuneration and pay structure in the public service. He said the living wage would range from 58,941/= for the lowest paid servant in U8, to 771,366/= per month for senior officials at U1 scale.

 Foreign: Burundi rebels break ceasefire 

November 23, 1997 (Foreign): A Burundian rebel group Front for National Salvation (FROLINA) ended an 18-month unilateral ceasefire and resumed its fight to topple Maj. Pierre Buyoya's military regime. The group resumed fighting because the Burundian Army massacred innocent civilians in the Nyanza-Lac region close to the Tanzanian border.
