Nov 20, 2020

For the next three years, the run will be held under the theme; ‘Men against AIDS to save the girl child’.

Ahead of the annual Kabaka Birthday Run on November 29, the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga has called on the public to join the kingdom in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Speaking to the press and staff of dfcu bank, Nakasero on Friday before he presented them with the running kit for the virtual run, Mayiga said the mission of the bank which focuses on the social and economic transformation of the people rhymes well with that of the kingdom because theirs is also to ensure that the people of Buganda live a decent life.

He said this year and the next two years, the run will focus on the fight against HIV/AIDS and called on the public to make their contribution against the fight.

"You cannot talk about culture and heritage and you separate them from the well-being of the people that is why the Kabaka tells us to prioritize the health of the people of Buganda and that is why this year and next two years we are focusing on Aids," Mayiga said.

"We are very gratified to partner with DFCU Bank in the effort to promote the well-being of the people to fight HIV/Aids; you know the Kabaka is the UNAIDS goodwill ambassador in the fight against the disease in the East and Central Africa and UNAIDS want to banish the disease in Africa by 2030," Mayiga stated.

Managing Director dfcu Bank Mathias Katamba advised the public to remain vigilant and aware of the numerous health challenges that we face as a society even in the face of COVID-19.

He said despite the rampant COVID-19 pandemic, HIV/Aids prevalence remains one of the highest high among the youth and young women and that at least 1.2 million are currently affected according to the UNAIDS Commission, which also requires attention.

"When we gather virtually on November 29, we will be united for a great cause, a cause that is above political affiliations, social strata, cultural beliefs, religious inclination, economic standing, and any other differences," Katamba said.

"Through this, we will get more possibilities for awareness on HIV/AIDS and community risk, more possibilities for men to embrace voluntary testing, more possibilities for health care for those who test positive, more possibilities for our mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters to live healthier lives and do more for their families, communities, and country," Katamba stated.

He said dfcu staff will take part in the run and encouraged all the public to participate in conformity with the current COVID-19 guidelines.

For the next three years, the run will be held under the theme; ‘Men against AIDS to save the girl child'.
