TOURISM   COVID-19

After Covid-19 crippled foreign tourism since March, the tourism industry is slowly but steadily switching to appeal to the domestic market.

The Minister of Tourism Geoffrey Kiwanda is appealing to Ugandans to make use of the COVID-19 pandemic and enjoy the VIP treatment before the foreign tourists return in full swing.

"It is you, citizens, who should love your attractions before the visitor does," argues Kiwanda. "Their appreciation should just be the icing of the cake. There is plenty to attract any sophisticated member of the family out there."

In the same tone, the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) is appealing to destination dealers and the catering industry to package their itinerary with what appeals to the domestic tourists.

"Much as your conventional tourist might want breakfast of toasted bread, Cappuccino, corn flakes and a Spanish omelette," says the UTB CEO Lilly Ajarova. "The Ugandan counterpart might want Katogo, Rolex or Bushera."

Adding that, Ugandans will appreciate the big five animals, water bodies, birds and mountains but many are interested to know their history, food and cultural practices.

The president Uganda Hotel Owners Association (UHOA), Jean Baguma said most service providers have slashed their accommodation prices besides providing more rooms across the country.

"It's all up to the tourist preference," explained Baguma. "There are tents for backpackers that cost sh20, 000, rooms that charge sh50, 000 and the high-end bed and breakfast of more than sh800, 000 per night respectively."

Baguma said most of the UHOA members are calling back their staff who were laid off during the Lockdown in preparation for the festive season. Many have been equipped with gloves, shields and masks.
