They called for the immediate release of political candidates arrested on Wednesday

Religious leaders in Uganda have expressed deep concern about the violent events that occurred in the country on Wednesday including what they described as brutal arrests of politicians.

They said the arrest of NUP flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and FDC's Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the destruction of property due to riots, and the loss of life of some innocent civilians was regrettable.

"We express our deep condolences to the bereaved families. May the Almighty God grant them eternal rest and be rest assured of our prayers," a statement read by the IRCU chairperson Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje stated.

The press conference was attended by Arch. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, Dr Joshua Lwere, Arch. Kaziimba Mugalu and Dr Joseph Sserwadda said this was not their final version since several other events were continuing to happen.

They promised to issue another statement after another meeting.

They called for the immediate release of political candidates arrested on Wednesday and in the event that they committed a crime, they should be presented in the courts of law.

They also asked the Electoral Commission to take charge of the electoral processes including security arrangements of all political candidates.

The meeting opened with a prayer by Kaziimba who called on the Lord for guidance in what he called a challenging and disturbing kind of violence.

"If we have ever needed you, we need you more today. Father may you touch the security forces, the citizens, and all of us to work for peace. Come and be in our minds and save your people," he said.
